The ASN received a request from Kelly Ackford, a youth services librarian and teacher from studymap.org, to share an article a young student, Amelia, and her father found about the origin of the sundial. This short, but interesting article, The First Clock - Origin of the Sundial, touches upon the invention of the sundial, its history, how they work, how to make your own, and includes an extensive list of links to other articles on timekeeping.

Also, if you are interested in making your own simple sundial, take a look at A Simple Horizontal Sundial from the Astronomy for Thinkers website. This article offers easy-to-understand instructions on how to make a two-piece sundial out of paper.

Thank-you Amelia, for bringing these educational resources to our attention!
