This image is of NGC 2238, the Rosette Nebula. The Rosette Nebula is in our galaxy, located in the Monoceros Constellation, and is about 5,500 light years away from Reno.

My Approach to Astrophotography
I prefer using a commercial grade DSLR, but no matter what happens, the setup and software can get complicated, so you need to factor that into your decision. Here is what I do with my setup.
